The Dursleys

Vernon Dursley -  Harry’s rich uncle, with whom Harry lives for ten miserable years. Dursley's are basicly the Muggle world at its most silly and mediocre. It is through Mr. Dursley’s view that we first see wizards, and his closed-mindedness toward the colorful cloaks and literate cats that he meets shows how different the human and wizard worlds are.

Petunia Dursley -  Mr. Dursley’s wife. Petunia is an overly doting mother to her spoiled son, Dudley, and a prison-keeper to Harry. She is haughty and excessively concerned with what the neighbors think of her family. She is somewhat humanized for us when we discover that she was always jealous of the magical gifts of her sister, Lily, Harry’s witch mother. Perhaps her malevolence toward Harry springs from an earlier resentment of her sister.

Dudley Dursley -  Harry’s cousin, a spoiled, fat bully. Annoying and loud, Dudley manipulates parental love to get what he wants—his outrageous desires for multiple television sets foreshadow the important scenes involving the Mirror of Erised and the wrongful desire for eternal life that motivates Voldemort. Dudley’s bullying of Harry also experiences Malfoy’s later bullying at Hogwarts, though he is less gifted than Malfoy.

Characters (Teachers)

Hagrid: An oafish giant who works as a groundskeeper at Hogwarts. Rubeus Hagrid is a kind creature with more kindness than brains. He cares deeply for Harry. (Eg. by the tears he sheds upon having to leave the infant Harry with the Dursleys). Hagrid symbolizes the importance of generosity and human warmth in a world menaced by conniving villains.

Albus DumbledoreThe kind, wise head of Hogwarts. Though he is a famous wizard, Dumbledore is a humble and adorable person as his name suggests. While other school teachers, such as Professor McGonagall, are obsessed with the rules, Dumbledore respects them (as his warnings against entering the Forbidden Forest remind us) but does not exaggerate their importance as much (I wish most teachers were like this). He appears to have an almost superhuman level of wisdom, knowledge, and personal understanding, and it seems that he may have set up the whole quest for the Sorcerer’s Stone so that Harry could prove himself.

Professor Quirrell: A stuttering and seemingly harmless man, and a professor of Defense against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. Quirrell appears as nervous and squirrelly as his name suggests for most of the story. It was him who nearly faints when announcing the news that a troll is loose in the school. It turns out later, however, that Quirrell has faked his attitude of being a noob and is actually a cold-blooded conniver. (Also Part of Enemies)

Professor Snape: A professor of Potions at Hogwarts. Severus Snape dislikes Harry and appears to be an evil man for most of the story. Snape’s grudge against Harry, which is similar from a murderous ill will, helps us remember the difference between forgivable things and unforgivable evil things.(Also part of Enemies)

Professor McGonagall -  The head of Gryffindor House at Hogwarts and a high-ranking woman in the wizard world. Minerva McGonagall is fair but extremely strict and severe in her punishments. Rowling named her after a notoriously bad nineteenth-century Scottish poet named William McGonagall who was highly confident of his own talents.

Characters (Enemies)

Voldemort: A great wizard gone bad. When he killed Harry’s parents, Voldemort gave Harry a lightning-shaped scar. Voldemort has now impacted Harry’s life. Voldemort, whose name in French means either “flight of death” or “theft of death,”. He is determined to escape death by finding the Sorcerer’s Stone. Voldemort’s weak point is that he cannot understand love, so cannot touch Harry’s body, which still has the traces of Harry’s mother’s love for her son.

Draco Malfoy: An arrogant student and Harry’s main enemy Malfoy, whose name translates to “dragon of bad faith,” is a rich snob from a long line of wizards. He makes fun of the poorer Ron Weasley and tells Harry to choose his friends more carefully. As the story progresses, Malfoy becomes more and more hostile to Harry and his friends, and there is a hint that he may grow up to become another Voldemort.

Bellatrix Lestrange: After escaping Azkaban prison in The Order of the Phoenix, Bellatrix murdered Harry's godfather, Sirius Black. And in The Half-Blood Prince, she gleefully wreaked havoc on Hogwarts — and torched Hagrid's hut! If that wasn't dark and wicked enough, Bonham Carter notes, ''she's totally besotted by Voldemort.''

Character Profiles (Main Characters)

Harry Potter: The protagonist of the story, who changes from weakling to powerful hero by the end. Marked on the forehead with a lightning-shaped scar, Harry is marked also by the confrontation between good and bad magic that caused that scar: the standoff between the evil Voldemort and his parents who died to save their son.  As he progresses, he shows himself to be caring and shrewd, a loyal friend, and an excellent Quidditch player.

Ron Weasley: From the moment they met on the train in the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry and Ron have been friends. If Harry's running into trouble, Ron will be right there with him. There have been moments of friction, though, since Harry has more fame and more money, Ron can get a bit jealous. There's romantic tension between Ron and Hermione, but the road to true love has some bumps.

Hermione Granger: Harry's other best friend, she is by far the smartest student in their class, and extremely gifted in magic. Born to non-magical parents, Hermione is usually the voice of caution, and tries to keep Harry out of trouble -- not that she's successful! But in the end, she's right there in the thick of things. She and Ron have promised Harry that they will be
with him on his quest to kill Voldemort.

Getting sorted.

As the students enter the great hall they are welcomed into a very big and well lit hall full of students and staff. In the middle an old man with a very long beard. In front of him a hat that moves and can talk. One by one Professor McGonagall calls them up to get sorted into their houses. As the hat calls up Malfoy, and he sits down even before the hat is on his head, the hat straight away shouts out " Slytherin!". Ron says that the worst wizard in history was in Slytherin. Then straight away Harry thinks "Please not Slytherin". The hat calls Ron up next then Hermione and and they both get into Gryffindor. As the hat calls Harry up Dumbledore sits up in excitement and curiosity to see what house he gets put into. As the hat gets placed on his head it speaks. " Hmm hard Slytherin will help you on your way to greatness". But Harry keeps repeating "Not Slytherin not Slytherin" Then finally the hat says " Well if not Slytherin then.... Gryffindor!". Immediately the crowd cheers and Dumbledore sits up and claps his hands and then Harry takes his seat next to Ron. At this moment he is feeling quite happy but as we learn later on there is more to learn about his life in Gryffindor and his friends and his family and his destiny.

The houses

Gryffindor values courage, bravery, nerve and chivalry. Its mascot is the lion, and its colours are scarlet and gold. The Head of this house is the transfiguration teacher and Deputy Headmistress, Minerva McGonagall. The founder of the house is Godric Gryffindor.

Slytherin house values ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness The house mascot of Slytherin is the serpent, and the house colours are green and silver. The Slytherin motto is "Slytherin will help you on your way to greatness". Salazar Slytherin founded the house. The Head of House is Severus Snape until near the end of the sixth book. Then, Horace Slughorn, the previous Head of House, comes out of retirement and becomes the head again.

On the way to Hogwarts.

As Hagrid and Harry enter the train station Hagrid leaves him for some unknown reason and gives him a ticket and directs him to platform 9 and 3 quarters. Harry gets to platform 9 but doesn't see and other platform, so he tries to ask a guard where the  platform is but gets rejected. In doubt he spots a big family consisting of 4 boys and 1 girl and their mother. He hears them say " Come on platform 9 and 3 quarters this way". Then Harry gets a shoot of hope and closely observes the family, one by one each of them run through a wall and disappear. Harry waits until most of the family has gone through until the last boy was left. He goes up to them and struggles but manages to ask the mother of the family how to get into the platform. She tells him just to go through the wall and do it fast so that it wont be too scary. In Harry's mind now he is thinking "will this work or is she just pulling of some magic trick?'. He has no choice and just goes for it, before he knows it he is in a special platform with a big and magical train. He gets on and sits on the train in shock.

Soon a boy knocks and asks if he can sit with harry, it was the same boy that was with his mum who helped Harry. He introduced himself, "I'm Ron, Ron Weasley. Then Harry introduced himself and Ron was in shock that he just met Harry Potter,  Harry now realises that he is very popular and famous. They soon get a visit from the Candy trolley and  the lady asks if they wanted any, Ron says no and holds up a moldy squished up sandwich, Harry feeling sorry buys the whole trolley for them to share as he took quite a lot of money from the bank. As they enjoy the sweets they get a visit from a smart talking girl. She introduces herself as Hermione and fixes Harrys glasses for him, she tells them to quickly change into their robes as they are just about to arrive at Hogwarts. As she leaves they discuss about their impression of her (smart, bossy, show off).

As they arrive at Hogwarts Hagrid is waiting there to bring them across the river to Hogwarts, as they float their way to Hogwarts all the students are all astounded by how big and magical the castle looks.

As they arrive at the castle and move up the stairs an old superior lady walks up to them and tells them to wait there as they will get sorted into their houses very soon. While harry and Ron wait a blonde hair kid walks up to them and says " so its true then? Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts". The crowd of students whisper and mutter "Harry Potter".

This is Crab and Goyle my best friends and im Malfoy Draco Malfoy", said Malfoy.

Ron snickers. Malfoy quickly looks to him and makes a judgement about his handy-down clothes and bad hair, he then says he must be a Weasley. He puts a hand out to Harry to try become allies with him but harry says no and pushes him away. The old lady who introduces herself as Professer McGonagall  tells them to come into the great hall as they are now going to get sorted into their houses.
