As a child, Harry was treated badly, he lives in his uncle Vernon and aunts house, with their son Dudley. The Dursley's are a very stubborn and uptight family that think of themselves as the superior family that rules over other family's. Harry unfortunately has to deal with this Dursley's. In the first book he lives in a tiny cupboard under the staircase and gets treated like dirt. He gets very little food and is very skinny and is made to do every chore in the house eg. cooking, cleaning etc. One day for Dursley's birthday they go out to the zoo to celebrate. At the zoo harry magically talks to a snake and makes Dudley fall through glass and hardens the glass back up so the Dudley is now stuck in the glass with no way out( how did he do that??!?!). As they arrive home Uncle Vernon pulls him by the collar and asks him very roughly "WHAT HAPPENED?" Harry replied " I don't know it was just like magic". Then uncle Vernon says " theirs no such thing as magic". The way Harry gets treated is unacceptable but is all part of a bigger scene that will be explained later on in future books.
The next day as Harry went to collect the letters, he comes across a latter for himself and gives the rest of the letters to his uncle, as he opens his own letter addressed to himself his cousin Dudley immediately snatches it from him. As he hands Uncle Vernon opens the letter he opens his mouth in shock and drops the letter, then the scene skips and shows him burning all the letters that keep getting re-sent. This shows that they know something about Harry that they do not want him to find out. A few days later a massive bunch of letters addressed to Harry fly into the house out of every hole eg.chimney and windows. Uncle Vernon loses his temper and says that they are moving to a "far away place". They now live on a very far away place in the middle of the ocean. (makes no sense how will they get resources and electricity?) then a massive big giant comes and bangs down the door and intimidates the Dursley's and hands Harry a birthday cake, and the same letter that Uncle Vernon has been burning for weeks. Harry now finds out that he is invited to a magical school (Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry). This is a very important scene in the movie as it starts off his magical journey all the way to when he fights the same wizard who gave him his scar.
